UPDATED
It is going to be on Sunday 27th July. Starting at 11am at the main meeting point in South Mimms services on the A1/M25.

From there we'll wiggle up though Hatfield to the Ayots and along some country lanes through some small villages perhaps taking in an old ruin of a church and another of a fortified mansion house overlooking Luton airport before SteveO takes over the route and we and we ride around the North Chilterns, stopping for lunch somewhere along the way.

I did a reccy today of the herts bit and I reckon it'll be a bit less than an hour and a half before we get onto the Dunstable downs bit of the ride where SteveO will take over

SteveO's found a really nice pub very close to Whipsnade here for lunch after my part of the route, then we'll head south to Tring, then back up to Dunstable Downs along a great peice of road for another breather and an Ice Cream!

From there, the full route will take in approximately 70 miles of lanes and countryside (and possibly even the dreaded magic roundabout!) but we can play it by ear on the day - looking like lunch --> 35 mile run --> ice cream --> 35 mile run --> beer!

We'll finish up in another lovely pub in Sarrat, where we can have a relax before heading to our respective homes.

There seems to be a few people who want to meet me in the Homebase carpark in Waltham Cross (Nexusmaximus and Smurph, Halfabusa, satelis ) - so I'll meet them there before we head to the South Mimms Services.

Meet time 10:30am for 11am start at South Mimms services.

Those who are meeting me at Waltham cross we'll meet a 10am in the Homebase car park (near Winston Churchill road roundabout) probably round the back of the carpark so as not to get in the way of DIYers!!

Meet list - those starred are meeting me in Waltham Cross before heading to the services

I'd like to join, but on holiday apart from the first and the last weekend of July. If you arrange on either weekend, count me in!

I have updated my Googlemaps route afor the Herts bit of the ride.

CLICKY

Steve O - I've now ended my route on Someries castle. I wondered if you'd take over leading the route from there? I think it's fairly simple to get to Luton from there.

Well I did a successful reccy on the route, and apart from one wrong turn near Someries that meant I ended up on the main road instead of the back road it went well. I decided to change the route to avoid the big "tesco" roundabout in Hatfield as I can see that we'd very easily get split up there and there isn't anywhere to stop and wait!

I had a look at George Bernard Shaw's house but to be honest I don't think we should bother with that as you can't really see anything from the road and you have to pay to get in so unless people are especially interested I think we'll miss that one out. I did find another nice ruin of Ayot st Lawrence old Church that we could stop and have a 5 minute look at. In actual fact there's probably more of interest at the church than at Someries!!

In all it will probably take 40 minutes to get from the car park in South Mimms services to after we've had a look at the church in Ayot St Lawrence. I got to Someries castle bang on an hour after leaving South Mimms. There is a fairly hairy bit of road the last 1/4 mile or so before Someries, which is all gravel and potholes and quite treacherous on two small scooter wheels - though it'd be easier on bigger and certainly on three wheelers.

The Leo after "off-roading" to near Someries castle

Perhaps we should wear our helmets in the castle??

So I reckon an hour and 15 ish from the start until we've had enough of Someries Castle. Hopefullly Steve O will take over from there and guide us to Lunch!

So who's definitely up for this?

Loonymoon
SteveO
