You speak a lot of sense Wozza!
I'm now thinking do I really want a 500? Of course I'd love one but the insurance is a bit of a bugger as I've only had my licence a year and lost my no claims due to a Citroen being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
My B125 is costing me just £60 a year for insurance, £15 for tax and it doesn't use tooooooooooooooo much fuel. |

I had a ride on the X7 250 and the quasar engine is a peach. It sounded a lot different to the old Yamaha 250 engine in my Leo 250. It was a lot freer reving and sounded like it revved higher and took off a lot quicker meaning getting away from the lights was much easier. I didn't notice a lot of difference in the top speed but I've seen 92mph on the clocks of the Leo so I'd say a real 85mph and it'll happily cruise at 75-80mph. I presume the quasar 250 will too if not a little faster.
I do find sometimes on my 250 that on a windy day I have more problems. The Piaggio engined 250 has a few more horsepower available than the Leo's engine so I'd think it wouldn't be so affected perhaps.
I still want a 500 though... and I want a Nexus.

If anyone is thinking of getting a Nexus new I would say wait a little. First up, the 492 must surely be introduced to replace the 460 before long, and the 250 is about to be upgraded to 278cc with a little extra torque if not hp. (the Swiss Gilera site already has the details, apparently.)
Of course if you want a really good handling 500 and don't want to take out a mortgage the Satelis 500 (already with the 492 engine that the Nexus does not have) is the obvious answer. Especially so since you can opt to have ABS, wheras Gilera/Piaggio and Yamaha cannot be bothered even to offer it a huge mark-up. The boot space on the Sat is much more generous than the Nexus, and I suspect the Tmax (but I am sure That Man may know better).
My Sat250 breezes up to an indicated 90mph quickly enough and has good oomph for overtaking most of the time. This might be helped by the Sat having the lowest claimed drag factor of any comparable scooter. In normal use I get about 200miles for a £12 tank fill, although this fell to 150miles when I was doing long distance nearly flat out all the way on the M11 & M1!
Granted, some here have had problems with their Sats, but mine remains in rude health after 14months and 14800miles._________________

Buy my Nexus 500 as seen in the for sale section. My only gripe with it really has been the head bearings which have gone twice, I know they are prone to it, but surely not every Nexus owner with high mileage has had to have them done about every 4000 miles. I have now done 12000 miles in 9 months and its been very good.
Other than that I have always been seduced by the Honda DN-01 and Mana, and finally managed to get the wife to agree to change the Nexus.
IMO I think its probably the best looking scoot their is in its field.

| If your head bearings have gone twice I would bet they were set too tight when they were changed. Mine have done 12k now and are still ok, but I did have to slacken them off after I tightened them too much.

yeah I'm sure they just did a bad job and now will try and squirm out of warranty work as they get less I think for warranty.
How difficult really is it to do yourself Dave, if I find they say piaggio have refused to accept a claim...
Its really the only thing that really needs to be done before I can sell it.

I haven't actually changed mine. They were changed before I bought it and slackened off once they settled down. I adjusted them up but must have done it too much and started to notice them going notchy. I decided to slacken them off, rotate the bearing, regrease and the re-adjust them and its been fine since then and passed the MoT in March with no problems.
You could try that yourself, not too hard at all.
Remove plastics from handlebars.
Remove pinchbolt on bars and life them off.
You then have to remove a locking ring which has cut outs in it, just knock it round with a screwdriver.
Then lift all the bits off until you get to the bearing.
At this point if you move the front wheel slightly the forks will move up/down giving you better access to see the bearing.
Add plenty of grease, and rotate the bearing 180ish.
Put everything back together and thats it

| Thanks Dave, I hope they will do it though. I guessing then the replacement requires pretty much you to take the front of the bike apart !! don't they have bearings top and bottom ??

| Replacement I think is pretty much the same, except you will need to remove the bearing off the top of the forks. They probably do have another bearing but its the top one that goes all the time.

| OK so removal of the bearing does that require any special tools ?? I guess if you rotate it 180 then it can be easily removed, or does the rotation happen without having to remove certain parts which would be needed to fully replace the bearing. The dealer was quoting 2.5 hours to replace the head bearing, sound excesive ?
