If you intend touring with longish daily stints, you really need a relaxed ride and although the Tmax would be 110% reliable, it isn't relaxing. The screen turbulence is bad and the 500 twin isn't exactly laid back, in fact it eggs you on to go faster. Luggage capacity isn't great and the swept up exhaust limits throw-over pannier size too.
The big burger or 'Wing would eat the miles with ease but both are expensive to buy and are big lardy machines even before you load on the luggage.
You could do a lot worse than a Piaggio X9 500 if you could find a nice late model. They cruise in a very laid back fashion, are pretty economical on long runs as long as you keep to legal speeds, and there are plenty of dealers who can fettle most things. Rider weather protection is as good as anything but the seat can give you a numb bum after a while.
They are cheaper too second hand and as long as it's been looked after it should be fine. Plenty of under seat room, will take a big top box, tunnel bag and panniers.

Well I know I biased Very Happy but you could always try an early Aprilia Atlantic though the style doesn't suit everyones taste.

They are big, comfy and reasonably powerful (they are fitted with the Piaggio 500 master engine). The bike is well equipped and even has self cancelling indicators.

If you did consider one I would go for the later model, not the 02 model as the ECU can't be re-mapped with the later Euro3 mapping on the earlier models.

Mine has been used in all weathers and has been 100% reliable.

Again they will be fairly cheap to buy..in the main... Laughing

Theres a Guy in Florida who rides each year to Alaska on a Silverwing. I think he has over a 100,000 miles on it now. I think he has a website or blog if I recall correctly. If I find the link I'll post it.

FWIW my wife really liked going on the back of my silverwing.

His name is Mike Tuccelli. He's made the trip 4 or 5 times mostly on a Silverwing, but he has now moved to a Goldwing. I don't know why. He put over 100,000 miles on his Silverwing.
Interestingly enough , he is completely deaf. He's a world renown expert in American Sign Language and uses the trip as means to raise contributions for institutions helping hearing and site challenged people. Good stuff.

His website is found here:

Lucky you! I learnt never to leave my mobile at home when I was riding my A...for a long time it had an aversion to wet weather...plus the dysfunctional front brake caliper, the exploding shock absorber, the failed speedo, the bizarre electrical glitches and weird instrument readings.....

Which is why I bought a T-max - though my mk2 had its share of electrical problems.

Shocked Shocked Shocked

The X9 is Piaggio's tourer (or the GP800 I beleive is more tour than sports when you actually ride one), but you may consider the X8 400 too. It's also comfy with good storage, enough power for most situations, good economy etc etc, it's a bit more compact and chuckable to ride than the X9 (and probably any of the other scooters mentioned bar the Tmax) though less emblazoned with gadgets (it doesn't have an LCD screen). You'd probably want to change the screen on the X8 though as the buffeting is a little tiring - for me it's not too bad with ear plugs and being short in the body I don't really want to go to a taller screen (I beleive the Givi screen is very tall for the XCool. I may investigate a laminar lip.

I rode 311 miles in my first weekend on the X8 and I could have gone a lot further - thoroughly enjoyed it. Done around 800 miles now and I haven't even had it 2 weeks yet.

Ah what reg was your Atlantic as I know the earlier one's weren't as good as the later models?
Mine has been fab full stop with no issues and as mentioned used in all weathers.
Oh remembered one thing, in the year that I've owned it, twice now on approach to Devils Bridge up near Kirkby Lonsdale the temp gauge has stopped working.... Laughing It's a regular stop for me. Once I've had a cup of hot choccy and switched on the ignition it's working again... Confused Very Happy That as I say has happened twice in a year on perfectly dry days.
My bike is definitely not effected by wet weather no matter how much it decides to piss down.... Laughing Laughing

Mine was an 02, so it was an early one. Wet weather troubles were eventually traced to a dodgy wire. The most entertaining instrument glitch was when the temp gauge (or maybe fuel gauge) did a complete circuit of the dial! I eventually said enough is enough when one of the rear shock absorbers started leaking oil......

I do think Aprilia improved the quality of Atlantic as production went along. Just one example, from the 2003 model it was fitted with a re- programmable ECU.
The rear suspension is a bit of a surprise as it's made by SACHS, who have a great reputation in the field of suspension. Admittedly I hate the stepless step up is it's easy to mess up, but my bike handles very well......I think so anyway... Laughing
Craig (Ghost) had an early Atlantic and I think his suffered from misfiring in wet weather , but once again mine has been fantastic.

Thanks for all the contributions.

My heart says T Max but my head says Burgman 650 cruiser with some performance if required.I'll just have to sell a few more birds (Budgies and Finches by the way!) I like the fact I can go quick if I need to but I don't want to feel the need to always go quick.

The lack of build quality and refinement with the Silverwing surprises me as Iv'e had many Honda motorbikes in the past!

I think a lot will depend on what I can get to test ride and for how long.
Even tho` I lke the GTS Vespa I need some extra comfort and Oomph if I'm going to participate on some of your Maxi runs!

I love the witty banter and information on this Forum, well done to all those who keep it running
Very Happy
