Once I got the X8 home and the rain had reduced to spitting I of course had to have a play with my new toy. I managed to unseize the rack that's supposed to swivel up to allow access to the boot. I also tested out the load space by stuffing a couple of bags in there. I managed to get a HEAD sports bag under the seat and a larger Eurohike rucksack in the boot - though it was a bit of a squeeze getting the rucksack in as it was a bit wide. I could have taken another large bag in the topbox.

I just wondered what bags other X8 400 owners manage to squeeze under the seat!

These were mine.

BY the way I noticed there was some water in the topbox so I assume that the seal is leaking a bit somewhere. Is there an easy fix for this like vaseline round the edges or something???

I also had a play with my satnav mount. I just tried the normal one that came with my satnav (just the cheapy navigo) it seemed fairly secure, though I'm not sure really how much I'd trust it. I did pull it about a bit and it didn't come off. Also I hadn't cleaned the screen or moistened the suction cup like I would if I was doing it properly. So I think it would be ok.

you've got some great bag space Shocked ( it's ok for some Laughing ) the sat nav suction bracket should be ok well they seem to hold onto car windows well, I would use a strap connected to the satnav aswell just incase it popped off, as for the leak check the rubber around the topbox see if it's split or come loose

Motax helmet bags (Fur lined with a zipper)are handy as they always fit in a helmet space.

Only because the load bay on the 400 is a bit smaller than the lower cc's due to the engine!!

I checked and my helmet won't go in the boot, not even upside down, twist around etc. It's because of the slider on the top - it's just too tall. It goes in fine under the seat, and I could fit two of them in the top box!!

Tee hee.

I also noticed that my Oxford chain doesn't fit through the security loop on the scooter.... however I've just realised I could probably have fitted the shackle from the Oxford boss alarm lock through there instead... I'll try that next time.

That's not a bad booty, plenty of space I'm surprised you could fit all those bags in! Very Happy

My old 125 X8 would get water under the seat when you opened it. Never worked out which bit was dribbling in, but it was certainly comming in from opening it.

The only other leak point to mention is the cover plate over the chasis vin plate. I packed mine with vasaline as I could see it might be a leak point,
Steve's Fuoco has this plate missing and his seat filled with water very quickly.

The space under the seat is actually bigger - due to the higher raised arch under the rear seat.
Make sure you remove the toolkit if it's still attached to the underside of the seat

Who told you that? I'd always heard the 400 had a slightly small storage space....

It may work out about the same as the 400 is longer, the side panels are different, and the seat tub and saddle would have to be longer too.
There is a lump in the bottom of the tub to accomodate the bigger engine though, so it probably balances out.
Like my front room, not a lot in it! Wink

I took the top box off today to go for a ride. I noticed that the wobble I experience when cornering at about 20mph was still there but not as bad.

When I got home I thought I'd have a go at taking the rack off as it looked easy enough to do. As soon as I undid the first bolt I thought "I shouldn't have done this" because the metal bit pinged out sideways and I knew I'd never be strong enough to push it back in line with the bolt hole again. So the whole rack had to come off Embarassed

Not a big deal as I don't think I'd need to use the top box much anyway - just for the occasional overnight jaunt. On the Leo I only bought a top box because my Caberg wouldn't fit under the seat, however it does in the X8 so I won't need it usually.

I think I'll have to either get Jason to help me or take it to Thompsons workshop the next time I want to put it back on though.... Confused Wish I hadn't touched it now... though it does look nicer without it and the blimmin' rack weighed a ton so I wouldn't be surprised if it goes and handles better without it.

don't forget to fit the lighter bar end weights when you remove the topbox kit. That keeps the steering nicer.
