Craig, don't get all upset. These things are never black or white and nobody will disagree that your bike was not one of the best. Whether that was down to previous owner neglect or the bike in general I guess we'l never know.
I'm no stranger to bikes with issues. I rode Harleys for 16 years, nearly 9 of those on a Sportster. Despite a design that runs from the 50s the Sportster still had fundamental design problems that often had me hovering outside the Honda dealer thinking "should I?"
So, I empathise as well as sympathise._________________ It ain't retro I've just been doing it that way for years!

having owned a 500cc scoot before, I wasnt keen on the yearly running costs that seemed to cripple my pocket at every service interval!
personally I didnt find the smiles per mile ratio outweigh the cost, but I do like the odd blast on a 500!
certainly cheaper than the sports bike in the garage though!

Meanwhile, back on topic (sort of)...
Don't let the perceived Yamaha servicing costs put you off the TMAX. The service interval is every 6k miles (something that the Piaggio group has only just caught up on) and the bits last for ages. The recommended belt change is every 12k miles, but experience with my old Mk1 TMAX showed that you can run this out to 18k miles with no bother. Brake pads were lasting 24k miles on the front and 30k miles on the rear, and tyres were only going at around 18k miles. The only "non-service" parts that ever needed replacing in almost 40k miles of use were a speedo sender (the only fault I ever had) and a set of fork seals. Unlike the Piaggio MASTER engines, everything on the TMAX engine that might go wrong can be got at without having to split the crankcase.
Besides, the TMAX isn't that much pricier to service than any other equivalent scoot no matter what the "opposition" might say. When I had an Aprilia Atlantic 500 Sprint I was anticipating I would save a packet, but I was wrong. The scoot went in for a standard service (oils, spark plug, general check) and I was rushed for an eye-watering £140. Heaven only knows how much it might have been if I'd needed a new belt (every 7500 miles), tyres or brake pads.
If you preferred the TMAX riding position, you really should get a spin on the new model. The screen and front aero on the old one was terrible, but the new version is just so much better. It also looks a damn sight nicer and rides very pleasantly too. It's a shame if your local Yammy dealer is a bit of a tit but, while good support is important, I really think you would be missing out just because you don't like him.
Leaving aside the whole TMAX v Nexus bullshit, would you really be happy with just 250 cubes after having 500...? I've done the same thing myself and regretted it. The smaller scoots were OK, but I found that I was restricted to the type of roads I could safely use. Overtakes required more planning and I was affected more by the direction and strength of the wind. Going back up to 500cc meant that I no longer had to worry about my choice of route and the prevailing wind conditions because I knew that I had the power there to tackle almost any situation._________________
