Hi Ya'all
I'm looking to purchase a T max in the near future and I am looking for advice. Can't afford a new one so looking at around £2500/£3000 budget. Can you advise on differences between a mk1 and mk2. Like what year did they change over and what changed. Is it better to find a low mileage mk1 or go the whole hog for a mk2, are they that improved?
I have noticed the clocks are different for a start.

The mk2s came in in 2004. Its tricky to say whether the changes are worth it or not - there are many worthwhile differences, but the essence of the bike is very similar. Main differences - fuel injection with 4.5 extra bhp (useful) - economy very similar, bigger front forks, 2 front disks instead of 1, 15" rear wheel, radial tyres, fitted immobiliser, new clocks plus tiny cosmetic changes.

Slightly different feel to the handling - the mk2 is more planted, whilst the mk1 had a lighter feel, but needs 'riding' more. mk1 forks a little bouncy for my taste, so mk2 possibly better ride & handling.

Pros for mk2 - more grunt, better suspension, better brakes
Cons for mk2 - more expensive to run - the radial tyres are pricy, and 2 lots of brake pads & disks to replace!

I'd prefer a mk2, but there isn't a huge amount in it - depends on how much extra you have to pay! Mileage isn't really an issue - T-maxs are generally very reliable and develop few problems as they get older. However, like anything, it needs proper servicing, so a FSH is a good idea.

Hope that helps

Tim

All the info you require is in the archive or available on the internet. For that budget, you should be ablt to get a late Mk1 53/04 or a well used Mk2 (if you can find one).

.......and a proper intro is the polite norm on here Very Happy

...but also as both discs work together, pad wear is halved over the same mileage, so they last a lot longer. I just checked mine at 7,500 miles and they were barely worn. the rear was slightly more worn but still not even halfway. The X9 would wear both front sets out in less miles, although the material thickness is a lot less when new than on the Yamaha pads.
£20 a set isn't astronomical for OEM pads especially if you get 15-20,000 miles out of them.

Tyres though can be expensive, although again my OEM Dunlops are still going strong and not ready for changing for a few thousand yet.

Hi
Thanks for all your advise that is very helpfull. Looks like I'll be on the lookout for a mk2.
Didnt realise I'd be in bother for going straight in and asking a question, I thought this site was to encourage people to come into the scooter fold. Didn't see no rules and regs anywhere!!

Obviously a light braker! Whilst my first set of pads lasted 11,000 miles, all the subsequent sets lasted 6000 miles! The replacements were EBC ones, so maybe I should have paid extra for Mr Yamaha's own labelled products. It may be £20 (or so) for the pads, but being mechanically incompetent and ignorant, I have to pay someone to fit them!

Hi Very Happy I' got a low mileage mk 1 at the end of last summer and am more than happy with it. Your price range should get you a Mk2 though. See whats around but both are highly rideable. Prices will go up as it gets warmer tho. Razz
