I'm currently bidding on a cheap Vivitar camcorder on ebay at the moment (like THIS one on Amazon). I hope to get it for £30 or less which I think will be a bargain... anyway...

I was hoping to mount the camera on my scooter/bike sometimes. I thought at the gunpowder ride last year that it would have been nice to get some footage of all the scoots on the move. There could have been some nice shots of all the long line of scooters moving off into the distance.

The camcorder I'm hoping to get is cheap because I won't mind risking it on the bike so much. I didn't want to subject my Panasonic TZ3 camera to it even though it's perfectly capable of taking pretty good quality video.

I know some here have done this before so I wondered how you mount your camera on the bike?

I've seen people strap them to the tank but of course that's not possible on a scooter (and I wouldn't want the potential damage to the tank on the honda). Some people mount them on the forks etc.

I've seen a home made mount that someone made out of some plastic plumbing connectors that went on the handlebars but on the scoot theres no bar visible to mount them on (though I could possibly do this on the bike).

These people do great suction mounts....but they are not cheap.

There was a three "fingered" grippy camera mount in Cotswold camping the other day, looks like people use them on MTB's. Try there?

come on now ferrit, he's talking about a £30 camera and you're sending him suction mounts for double the cost Shocked

I use a gorillapod tripod for my casio digital camera and mount it on either on the handlebar or my jacket. If on handlebar, it shakes too much and you don't get good quality. Best place for it to be is right in front of your chest inside the hidden external zipper of your jacket (if you have one) or somewhere you can attach it to. Your body absorbs most of the shaking motion which ends up having a nice video quality

here's an example:

But like you, I don't want to risk my camera everywhere, therefore I'm planning to buy an action cam from Oregon scientific. Cheapest is around £70 at the moment.

I think you meant gorillapod - the tripod I'm using. Wink

Now putting it on the jacket that is a very good idea., kind of depends how big the camera is but I'll look into it if and when I get it.

I like the look of gorillapods but even they can be expensive... mind you it would be useful anyway for my normal (more expensive) digital camera.

I was interested in the "action cam" too, but decided that the quality is a bit limited for the price and I may use this camcorder for other occasions as I believe the quality is fairly good in outdoor or good light.

How about this then?

http://www.knick-knack.com/howto/motorcycle/cheap-handlebar-camera-mount.html

Obviously this is a motorcycle with nice metal bars to make use of, which we mostly don't have on scooters, but it gave me an idea... Idea

I'll try to build a mount similar to this configuration, but using the top of the brake fluid reservoir as the base. If I can replace the two screws that shuts the reservoir cap with longer ones, then I can find a plastic bit the same size as the cap that would sit on top of it and just run the screws through.

This plastic bit would be the mount, just like the T section pipe that guy has used. Then I can just run another screw from the middle, inside out, that would fit the tripod hole at the bottom of my camera, just like the guy did. Rolling Eyes

What do you think?

If I'm successful, we'll have some nice video recordings on the essex meet Wink

I almost forgot, I also tried the gorillapod on the pillion handlebars once for a short trip, just to see the action from another angle. It was wicked! But unfortunately its 1- unsafe 2- can be stolen easily with my back turned to it 3- it gets a lot of crosswinds as can be seen towards the end of the video Laughing

ah and the video for it:

Depends on the weight. They do a mount that will hold 500g for less than £20. So far it has not failed to hold my camera on the car.

Or do you think I thought she should buy the proffesional rig that will hold it 2' out from the bike Smile

Well it looks like I'll be paying a little more than £30 for that Vivitar, I've lost two auctions and I've bid up to £43 on this one and I expect I'll be out bid. Thing is I've looked at the history and they have been going for £51+ the £9.99 deliver. On Amazon the same camera is £39.99 with free super saver delivery however they're currently out of stock. The company that is selling them on Ebay is also selling them via Amazon for £44.99 plus the 9.99 delivery charge - so there's a lot of mugs out there paying over the odds on ebay.

I'll see if my current bid wins - though I doubt it, then I'll decide whether it's worth buying it on Amazon. Though on the Ebay auction you get quite a good accessory pack with it including 1GB SD card, lens cleaning kit etc etc.

hmmm

There's also THIS camera on ebuyer at the moment but I'm unsure whether it's as good, though it says it's 12MP it's no doubt interpolated from a lower figure - also it doesn't have much info and doesn't state whether it has the necessary threaded hole for a tripod etc.

Whaddaya more experty types think? Obviously the quality isn't going to be HD standards but both offer VGA. I think the Vivitar just has it myself especially with the accessory pack - but they are getting lots of bids on ebay (annoyingly!)

Kind of irrelevant now as I just won the ebay auction on the Vivitar. £42.50 + £9.99 postage. Very Happy A little more than I wanted to pay, but it seems that the bundle is quite a good one!

Now, I've been looking at my hivis waistcoat and there's two strong tabs at chest height that I might be able to use with a Gorillapod to rig something up there.... Just have to get a gorilla pod now.... Sad
